Williamsburg: 2015 Neighborhood Guide

by | Aug 4, 2015

Located between Nassau Avenue and Flushing Avenue, North to South and the East River and Bushwick Avenue, East to West, Williamsburg is one of the most in-demand neighborhoods of all New York’s boroughs. In Williamsburg, it’s impossible to be bored. So come hungry; this neighborhood will feed your appetite as well as your creative soul.

Accessibility: Williamsburg doesn’t have as many subway options as some of the more southern Brooklyn neighborhoods but, it does provide access to the L, G, J, Z, and M trains. Beyond public transportation, The Williamsburg Bridge is great for walking, biking, or cabbing it to the Lower East Side. For a more thorough, albeit a bit slower method of transport, try out the East River Ferry, which makes loops around North and South Williamsburg, LIC, Greenpoint, Dumbo, East Midtown, the Financial District, and Governor’s Island. The B24, B32, B39, B43, and B59 buses are also all accessible from this neighborhood.

Lifestyle: For those of you looking to find a younger, hipper lifestyle in Williamsburg, you’ll want to start your search in the northwestern part of the neighborhood. One of the most dominant features of life in this area is the live music scene. Here, you’ll have endless access to performances from Rock and Roll to Punk to Folk at one of Williamsburg’s hundreds of music venues. Favorites include The Music Hall of Williamsburg and The Knitting Factory.  Beyond music, this neighborhood also has a vibrant visual arts scene and is full of galleries and smaller museums. Here, creativity is the name of the game.

Restaurants and Bars: So much to choose from, it’s hard to know where to begin! In Williamsburg, you’ll find a mixture of classic cuisine from all over the world and cutting-edge creations unique to just one or two restaurants. If you’re looking for fried chicken, biscuits, or a fresh slice of pie, head to Pies N’ Thighs, an amazing neighborhood staple. Go there, and then order everything on the menu (trust us, you won’t regret it). For amazing Venezuelan fare, try Caracas Arepa Bar. Barcade is a must for craft beers with a dash of old school gaming.  For outdoor eating (at a very high level), head to the internationally-acclaimed Smorgasburg, a massive outdoor food market where you’ll find everything from your fresh veggies for the week to vendors specializing exclusively in whoopee pies.

Cost of Living: The Williamsburg housing market features a mix of luxury high rise buildings, walk ups, and smaller buildings farther to the east. The median rental price of a one-bedroom apartment here is $3,000 a month. The average Williamsburg apartment goes for an average of $900,000, but purchasing in a luxury high-rise could put you in the $1-2 million range. Because the neighborhood is so large and diverse, however, you’ll find a lot of variation in price point, size, and style across Williamsburg.
