Why Our Agents Love Autumn in New York: Staying Active with Jon Amundsen

by | Oct 22, 2024

Jon Amundsen’s favorite thing about fall in New York? Having an exquisite backdrop for outdoor sports and fitness activities. A former Division 1 tennis player for the University of Oregon and now a top-producing agent with The Agency, Jon has found ways to incorporate his passion for fitness into his busy lifestyle. Here’s a look at Jon’s favorite ways to stay active in the city during the fall.

Where are your favorite places to play tennis in NYC during the fall? And what do you like about them?

It’s easily Central Park. There’s nothing like experiencing the beauty of the changing leaves while enjoying a match—it’s the perfect way to embrace the season in the heart of the city. It’s not for the faint of heart though. Typically, you have to line up for a court by 5:15 or 5:30 a.m. at the latest. With the time change, you find yourself waiting in complete darkness, but you’re among true New Yorkers who have been coming here for years. This adds to the experience—there’s a camaraderie among players of all ages and skill levels. Strangers become familiar faces, and eventually, friends. It’s a fantastic community.

If I can, I also love hitting the tennis courts at the National Tennis Center. It definitely requires some planning, but it’s worth it!

How do you incorporate fitness into your busy schedule as a real estate agent?

I usually have the best luck early in the morning or on weekends. Sneaking some time in before my work starts is the best way to start the day.

When fall arrives, do you have a go-to park or outdoor space in the city for tennis or fitness activities?

Carl Schurz Park is unbeatable. Situated just above the East River, it offers open views of Queens, Brooklyn, and Lower Manhattan. The park also boasts three beautiful pickleball courts, where the community runs well-organized, respectful and fun games. You don’t even need a paddle—just show up with a great attitude and get ready to play. I’ve met many wonderful people from the neighborhood there. It’s a beautiful spot to stretch and start your day and a soothing place to achieve your mental fitness goals. It’s good for both the mind and spirit.

Besides tennis, what other outdoor activities do you enjoy in NYC during the fall to stay active?

I love finding time for a run around the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. It’s the perfect way to experience the vastness of Central Park and witness the beauty of the changing leaves right before your eyes. Running here gives you Manhattan at its finest, and it always reminds me why I chose to live in this incredible city. The reservoir’s loop is 1.58 miles—perfect for a quick shot of exercise with one lap, or, if I’m looking for a challenge, I’ll go for two. It’s a great escape and a truly cathartic experience.
