Fall is here, and while the temperature chills the New York art scene stays hot. Chelsea Picken Cain shares her top picks for theater shows and museum exhibits that you won’t want to miss this season.
What are your favorite theater shows in NYC this fall and why?
There is lots opening on Broadway this fall, but the most anticipated of all is the revival of Sunset Boulevard. It didn’t take long for another Andrew Lloyd Webber piece to grace our Great White Way, but this transfer from London is shaking up audiences and showing them a new side to an old musical. Nicole Scherzinger is the star, Norma Desmond- made famous by Glenn Close- and stars she does. It’s Broadway meets Haunted House and worth a look (and a reflection cocktail after).
I can’t wait to see my Broadway hero, Patti Lupone, in the new play, The Roommate, written by Jen Silverman. Lupone’s co-star is the legendary, Mia Farrow, and it’s a 90-minute, one-act play about two women from varied backgrounds who are embarking on a journey of further self-discovery. Seeing Patti in anything is an out-of-body experience and there’s a reason why she’s on fire in her career after five decades in the business. See it if you can snag a ticket!
Do you have any must-see museum exhibits or gallery shows this fall?
You can’t escape the real estate, interiors and architecture infatuation in New York City and the MET has set us up with a great exhibition through March 2025. See Paul Rudolph’s renderings, sculptures, ideas at the most iconic art museum in the country — if not the world.
What do you love most about theater and the arts scene in NYC?
There’s nothing like it in the world. It’s the absolute best of the best. From commercial Disney to church basement one-woman shows, New York is brimming with the most thoughtful, weird, impactful and brilliant creatives and we are only a subway ride away to be a part of it all. It doesn’t start and stop with Broadway, either. The opera, ballet, symphony, jazz clubs, art galleries, sculpture gardens, experimental movement — it’s here and it’s really, really good.
