Upper East Side: 2015 Neighborhood Guide

Located between the East River and 5th Avenue, from East to West and 96th Street and 59th Street, from North to South, the Upper East Side is one of the more relaxed neighborhoods in the city. It is geared towards families with young children with its upscale yet unobtrusive nature.

Accessibility: The area is mostly served by the 4, 5, and 6 trains but you can also use the N/Q and F lines in the southernmost part of this neighborhood. Buses are plentiful with the M98, M101, M102, M103, and M15 lines all running North/South and the M96, M86, M79, and M66 lines running East/West throughout.

Lifestyle: The Upper East Side is a good place to slow down and take a breath. With Central Park as the entire western border of the neighborhood, residents are never lacking in green space. There is also Museum Mile where you can take an afternoon stroll and soak up some culture at The Met, The Guggenheim, and many others. Nightlife is in UES is alive and well but does not include members-only clubs or guest lists. It is much more causal.

Restaurants and Bars: UES has some of the best restaurants in the entire city. Michelin star-awarded chefs such as David Burke and Daniel Boulud have restaurants here. Enjoy their absolutely outstanding food at David Burke Fishtail and Daniel Boulud’s namesake restaurant. In contrast to these super luxurious eats, you can also find many pubs, small bars and independent casual restaurants on the Upper East Side. Stop into Lexington Bar and Books to enjoy a cigar and some whiskey at the end of a long hard day.

Cost of living: UES is known for being super expensive and it home to the wealthiest zip code in the country, but the average rental is below the Manhattan average. The median rent for a one bedroom in the neighborhood is a mere $2,850/month. Listing prices for apartments to purchase, on the other hand, average between $2.5 and $9 million
