The Best Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in NYC

by | Mar 13, 2018

Whether you’re Irish or just wearing a “Kiss me, I’m Irish” shirt, St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. Irish flags draped around people and bars, some dressed as cheeky leprechauns, and everyone donning green and orange, the Irish spirit is in the air. Here are some things you can do in New York City for St. Patrick’s Day.

This year, St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday (so do your happy dance). The very first thing you need to do if you’ve never done it before is attend the New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The parade starts at 11 AM on 44th Street and goes to 79th Street, while passing the historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral, so be sure to set up base camp around there. Make sure you have your four leaf clover and appropriate colors on (hint: it’s green).

If you don’t want to walk too far and would rather stay around the parade, The Perfect Pint (123 West 45th Street) is a wonderful place to celebrate with the locals. With 30 beers on tap (including the well-known favorite, Original Guinness) and a rooftop deck, The Perfect Pint is an ideal place to start your Irish festivities.

If you decide to start eating and drinking prior to the parade, The Irish Exit (978 Second Ave) is the place you want to be. At this appropriately named Irish watering hole, you can have an Irish breakfast buffet, along with mimosas and green beers from 8 AM until noon.

Throughout NYC, there are pubs and bars that will allow you to hop from place to place and experience this Irish holiday to its fullest extent. From The Irish Pub (837 Seventh Ave) to Paddy Maguire’s (237 Third Ave), you’ll be able to try a dizzying array of beers, eat corned beef and cabbage, and celebrate with other green-clad locals.

When thinking about where you and your friends should end the night, stop by Paddy Reilly’s Music Bar (519 Second Ave), which is known for its great beer and live music.

If you aren’t into the Irish pub crawl, you could take a workshop to learn some great Irish skills. This could include making a beer mug at Brooklyn Glass (142 13th Street) or putting your best foot forward with some Irish step dancing and trying some traditional food at the St. Patrick’s Youth Center (268 Mulberry Street) at 4 PM.

Regardless of what you do on St. Patrick’s Day, New York City is the place to be. When you’re in New York for any type of holiday, it just feels a lot more special.

Lastly, Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

As the Irish say, “Here’s to me, and here’s to you. And here’s to love and laughter. I’ll be true as long as you. And not one moment after.” Have fun and stay safe this St. Patrick’s Day!
