A contemporary masterpiece, the newly built Brentwood estate at 2188 Mandeville Canyon Road is as striking and luxurious as it is warm and inviting. Designed by award-winning architect Noah Walker, the residence features exquisite forms and details that reflect a unique vision and creative style affectionately named Mandeville Modern. “It captures the intention we set forth in designing the house,” explains Noah. Inspired by the rustic beauty of the surrounding landscape and elegance of vernacular structure, he injected a pulse of modernism into agrarian forms to create a timelessly refined tour de force that blurs past and present.
Listed by The Agency’s Blair Chang, the residence boasts six bedrooms, twelve bathrooms and almost 19,000 square feet of pristine and sumptuous living space on four sprawling acres that offer sublime views of the city, ocean and canyon.
Watching horses trotting through the canyon, Noah thought to himself that the project should be equally as free and unencumbered. Seeking to harmoniously blend the home with the layers of the canyon, he designed soaring 13-foot ceilings and expansive glass walls that humbly and intentionally incorporate the structure into the land while celebrating the indoor-outdoor lifestyle intrinsic to Southern California.
AD100 interior designer Jamie Bush shared Noah’s vision of harmony. Using vintage and custom pieces in an organic palette, he infused a sense of effortless balance into the estate. “The intention was to create an organic modernism unifying the interiors with the architecture and landscape design as one holistic vision,” he explains.
The creative pair collaborated closely on a minimally furnished loggia at the entrance, leading directly through to the rare flat pad of land. “When one walks to the edge it’s almost as if they are walking straight into the horizon,” Noah muses. The strategic pocketing of giant glass doors and composition of structures, some touching and others free-standing, creates an airy living space, where “the boundary between the home and landscape is all but erased.”
The interiors mirror the synchronous glamor of the city and coarse desert terrain. Stunning black Italian marble and Miele appliances juxtapose oak cabinetry in the kitchen, and a commanding metal and wood staircase leads to the second level bathed, where the bedrooms outfitted in one-of-a-kind furnishings and bathed in natural light overlook the tranquil and verdant grounds.
Landscape designer Christine London created a wonderland inspired by the surrounding hillsides, with groves of native plants for farm-to-table dining as well as an intimate outdoor area for entertaining and relaxation, complete with a grill, bar and pizza oven.
The 75-foot, outdoor architectural Lautner-edge pool and complementary Jacuzzi help frame the surrounding views. “The way the waters go right up to the edge of the pool then disappear helps create framed invisible visual elements,” says Noah. “It’s as if you’re looking at giant pixels creating a classic painting up close.”
Opportunities for productivity and recreation abound, with multiple offices, a 12-person home theater, 1,650-bottle wine room, full bar, gym, steam room and an indoor pool. The home has also been outfitted with best-in-class technology, including Lutron and Crestron systems as well as Mitsubishi backup generators. Other amenities include a security system, four-car garage, separate guest house, pool house and utility structure.
