Few know the Westside of L.A. like The Agency’s Santiago Arana. Having lived, worked, and raised his family in the area since 2007, Santiago brings a deep-rooted expertise and perspective on this vibrant community. We sat down with him to uncover what makes the Westside such an incredible place to live, and what the future of this ever-evolving market looks like.
How long have you lived on the Westside, and what initially drew you to this part of L.A.?
I moved to the Westside in 2007. The area was a natural fit as I was beginning to build my family and have kids. It was also where my real estate career was taking off, so it quickly became the right place for me.
What do you most enjoy about the Westside now?
The proximity to the ocean and the unique lifestyle it offers. It’s a beautiful blend of city energy with a laid-back, coastal vibe.
What about the Westside stands out to you compared to other parts of L.A.?
I love the access to top-notch schools and parks, and as an active person, I appreciate being close to places where I can hike, swim, and mountain bike. It’s rare to find an area where you can enjoy so many different outdoor activities in one place.
Do you have any favorite local spots?
Will Rogers Beach is fantastic. For dining, Fia Steak is my favorite steakhouse, and during the week, you can find me at Baltaire, Toscana, or Takao for lunch. On the weekends, Felix Trattoria, Giorgio Baldi, and Juicy Ladies are some of my go-tos for dinner. I also love biking along the path to Manhattan Beach and surfing between Santa Monica and Malibu.
How has the Westside evolved over the past few years?
More people are recognizing what the Westside has to offer. Real estate prices have continued to rise as more people move here from different parts of the city. With that demand, the lifestyle amenities have only gotten better—restaurants, retail spaces, fitness centers, and more have flourished.
What trends are you noticing in terms of buyer preferences in the Westside market?
Buyers on the Westside are increasingly focused on health, wellness, and fitness amenities. They’re looking for spaces that offer these conveniences as part of the lifestyle.
Do you foresee any major developments impacting the Westside market in the coming years?
A significant development on the horizon is the new project by Michael Dell’s MSD Capital in Santa Monica. They’re transforming the iconic Miramar Hotel site with a stunning new hotel and residences, featuring 312 hotel rooms, 60 luxury condos, retail spaces, and a 475-car garage, all designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners. It’s going to be a huge draw.
