As fall settles in, now’s the perfect time to refresh your home’s interiors and create a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The Agency New York’s Luke Hoback shares his favorite tips for revamping your space this season. Whether you’re looking to update your indoor décor or enhance your outdoor space for gatherings, Luke offers practical, budget-friendly ideas to make your home feel snug and seasonally stylish.
What are some of your favorite fall interior design trends?
I enjoy anything that invites me to take a deep breath, relax, and get comfortable. After the summer season of outdoor activities, travel, and sunshine, I love that fall allows us to get back into our homes to gather with loved ones.
Do you like to cook or bake anything in particular this time of year?
Yes! Cooler temperatures mark the return of the crock pot in my house, and a favorite savory staple is a pork tomatillo stew that my dad always made growing up. It pairs perfectly with homemade cornbread.
Do you have any particular decor traditions in your home this time of year?
I like to add darker, muted color accents throughout my home during the fall, to bring the changing colors from nature. Whether it’s a dark orange throw blanket or mossy green pillowcases, they invoke a cozy, grounded feeling every time I come home.
Do you have any tips or tricks when it comes to creating an inviting atmosphere at home during the fall?
Lean into textures this season. Layer multiple blankets made from different materials on both your beds & sofas. Consider swapping your linen sheets for flannel to keep things warm and cozy.
What are a few small, budget-friendly changes that make a big impact when it comes to creating a cozy fall atmosphere at home?
Create a candle corner in each room. Find a tray, mix and match candles of different heights, colors, and scents, and maybe even snag a box of matches from your favorite local restaurant host stand to complete the look.
What are your favorite colors or textures to incorporate into fall home décor? And what do you like about them?
Browns, mustard yellow, orange, and green are calming and allow you to feel wrapped up in the beautiful fall hues before the leaves have all fallen away. Textures like boucle, flannel, wool, and leather all create a rustic, outside-in feel.
What can homeowners do to update their outdoor spaces for fall and make them more inviting for gatherings?
Be sure to stay on top of leaf cleanup! A beautiful backyard can look unkempt quickly if there is a layer of soggy leaves lying around. For a nighttime gathering, consider adding some overhead string lights to your patio or deck, and uplighting the trees in your driveway. Your guests will be able to enjoy the outdoor space long into the night, and the uplighting adds a sense of drama and luxury.
In your experience, what home improvements or décor updates help increase a property’s appeal to potential buyers during the fall and winter seasons?
Don’t be afraid to use scents! Light a spice-inspired candle in the bathroom, bake a loaf of pumpkin bread before an open house. There’s nothing like walking into the front door and feeling like you’re coming home to something made with love.
