East Village: 2017 Neighborhood Guide

by | Jan 30, 2017

Home to an endless array of eateries that juxtapose the vintage record stores and clothing shops, the East Village has all the charm and quirks of a top place to live.

Bordered from South to North by Houston St. and 14th St. and from East to West by the East River and 4th Ave./Bowery, the East Village is home to the city’s best parks (we recommend Tompkins Square Park).

The East Village is an easy trip from anywhere in Manhattan. Whether you’re coming via the (F) train at the Second Avenue station, the (4 & 6) trains at the Astor Place station, or the (N, Q, R & W) trains at the 8th Street NYU station, coming in and out of the East Village is convenient. For local transit, the (M1, M2, M3, M8, M9, M101, M102 & M103) buses run through the neighborhood as well. However, despite the multitude of transportation options in the East Village, once the L train shutdown rolls out in 2019, there will be a hit in the neighborhood’s accessibility to Brooklyn.

LifestyleLifestyle

The East Village boasts a unique look and vibe that stands out even in such a busy city as New York. A variety of street art colors the area’s pre-war buildings while vintage shops and record stores maintain a nostalgic feel. Typically quiet during the day, the neighborhood offers its residents beautiful, tree-lined streets and parks for outdoor relaxation. When the sun goes down, the eccentric nightlife kicks off. Locals flock to St. Mark’s Place “a bustling, vibrant street” for good eats and good times.

Restaurant & BarsRestaurant & Bars

Food and drinks are in plentiful supply in the East Village. For a fun night out with friends, Amor y Amargo is a classic no-frills cocktail bar. For more historical watering holes, try McSorley’s Old Ale House, which boasts the title of New York City’s oldest continuously operated saloon (they’ve been there since 1854!).

For food, the East Village has a plethora of eateries with diverse fare. TripleMint’s go to authentic ramen locale is found at Ippudo, but for those wishing for more triangular foods, the original 2 Bros. Pizza can be found in St. Mark’s Place. Welcoming to all, the East Village even features high-end vegan dishes at Avant Garden. No matter the craving, the East Village has just the cure.

CostCost

All the fun and excitement associated with the East Village isn’t exactly cheap, but at a median rent of $3,150, the neighborhood is right on par with the NYC average. Justifiably one of New York’s most popular neighborhoods, East Village residents are undoubtedly getting a lot of bang for their buck.

Final VerdictFinal Verdict

The East Village is home to some of the city’s most highly sought-after hotspots and an unparalleled local atmosphere. We implore you to have a look around and feel free to pop into any enticing storefronts. But be warned: you might just fall deeply in love with the East Village.
