Battery Park City: 2016 Neighborhood Guide

by | Jul 12, 2016

Known for its pristine views, calming atmosphere, and the Hudson River, Battery Park City is a quiet little haven hidden in downtown Manhattan.

BPC’s eastern and western borders are West Street and the Hudson River, respectively, while its North to South borders are Chambers Street and Battery Place. With gorgeous views in a quiet area, Battery Park City may be the perfect spot for those who wish to escape hectic city life while staying in the city.

Accessibility

Subway

Commuting to and from Battery Park City can be difficult. In terms of subway transportation, there is no line that leads directly into Battery Park City. Of all the lines, the ones within a 10-minute walking distance from BPC are the (1, 4, 5, N, & R) subway trains. However, these subways only provide north and southbound transportation from around Manhattan.

Buses are the most convenient mode of public transport. For horizontal travel to and from BPC the (M9 & M22) buses will provide access while the (M22) bus covers vertical travel.

Lifestyle

The hidden atmosphere makes the neighborhood feel homey and almost like an escape from the big city. The quiet streets, ample parks, and low crime rate make BPC perfect for families.

On sunny days you’ll find residents lounging in one of the neighborhood’s five parks or walking along the banks of the rivers. The wide expanses of water on three sides give great views, and plenty of places to enjoy the sun. Battery Park City is seemingly designed for relaxation: popular after work pastimes are laying on the grass and sitting on one of the neighborhood’s many park benches. For those wishing to enjoying a beautiful summer day, BPC is the ideal spot for you.

Restaurant & Bars

RestaurantBars

Although it’s small relative to other neighborhoods, there is no shortage of restaurants in BPC. With family favorites like Mighty Quinn’s Barbeque and Shake Shack, there is a wide array of options for any palate. Our personal favorite is Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar, which serves, in our opinion, the best sushi in  Manhattan – they serve the most delicious piece of toro.

While it’s a great family neighborhood, there are still many fantastic bars in the area . Our personal favorites are the Black Hound, Amada, and Honorable William Wall – each has an eclectic array of cocktails, amazing food, and outstanding scotch. Our personal favorite is the Loopy Doopy Rooftop Bar which matches unparalleled views with casual drinking; any night featuring this bar will be unforgettable.

Cost of Living

Cost

Renting in this secluded area does not come cheap, unfortunately. A large number of the apartments located within BPC are luxury complexes and condo buildings. Therefore, the median monthly rent for BPC is around $5,275 which is nearly $300 higher than Manhattan’s median rent. While the price may be higher than the Manhattan average, the immaculate riverside views, relaxed atmosphere, and delicious restaurants make Battery Park City a perfect spot for a different kind of New York living.
