Astoria: 2016 Neighborhood Guide

by | Nov 19, 2016

Featuring breathtaking skyline views and some beautiful people in a warming community, Astoria may also be featured in Oregon, but Astoria, New York completely surpasses anything Oregon can offer.

Bordered North to South with Ditmars Boulevard to 36th Avenue and East to West with Steinway Street to The East River, Astoria boasts over 5 beautifully scenic parks.

AccessibilityAccessibility

Going to and from Astoria is actually very convenient and very quick (assuming you’re near a major subway station). From Union Square to Astoria, the commute can take 20 minutes easily, and since Astoria Ditmars Blvd is the last stop for the (N & W) subway lines, you can enjoy a smooth and convenient ride into Astoria as you try (but eventually will) not to nap  on the subway. For easy vertical travel, the (N & W (yes, I already said these I know) subway lines will take you up and down everywhere. However, if you find yourself on the (M & R) line, the 36st Street stop will be surprising and lifesaving.

For those wishing for an easier horizontal travel aside from those things you call feet, the (Q18 & Q102) bus lines can provide some solace. However, to make it more convenient,  the (Q69) bus can transport you further up or down Astoria. Despite the accommodating transportation options, I can’t emphasize enough the charm of simply walking around Astoria. Check out Astoria Park and I guarantee you won’t regret it.

LifestyleLifestyle

If I had to describe Astoria in one word it would be artsy. It’s a fluff word, but it aptly describes a majority of this neighborhood. Astoria Park provides some amazing Manhattan views in one of the largest open spaces in NYC. Featuring a gigantic pool with ample features, Astoria Park is where you’ll find many residents playing tennis, taking selfies with the Hell Gate Bride, or trying not to freeze to death in the pool. The Museum of the Moving Image (pronounced Mommy) is another locale to appreciate beautiful works of art as they flutter around in front of you. However, Socrates Sculpture Park is where you’ll find plenty of residents and families alike enjoying their time and gazing upon one of the many architectural masterpieces.

Restaurant & BarsRestaurant & Bars

Astoria features a variety of restaurants from juicy burgers to Greek sweets. You can grab a quick bite at Petey’s Burger for some quality meat (bonus: they only use black Angus beef). My mouth is watering just talking about it. Looking to skip dinner and go straight for desserts? Astoria is the perfect place to get away with that. Victory Sweet Shop was established in the late 1960s and features everything from homemade Greek pastries to exclusive Mediterranean specialties. These delicious platters will have your taste buds buzzing.

Or are you looking to skip dessert and go straight for the booze? La Sala offers wine, beer, and creative cocktails, while enjoying the elegant ambiance of their exclusive and chic cocktail bar. Want more of a dive bar that you can pig out at? No worries, Astoria has plenty of options for you. Check out the Irish Whiskey Bar on 31st street. They have great drinks and offer a fun atmosphere. Sip on some quality Irish whiskey, while watching your favorite sports team slay the competition.

Cost

Cost

Many journey to Astoria for its relatively affordable prices, in comparison Manhattan, and the simple commute. Compared to Manhattan’s median sales and rental prices at $1,220,000 and $5,299 respectively, Astoria features a median sale price of $675,000 and rental price of $1,647.

Final VerdictFinal Verdict

Astoria is dripping with unique artwork covering warehouse walls, inspiring culture and a close-knit community. This neighborhood features some mouth-watering food with a variety of different spices and cuisines to choose from. Come to Astoria for the stunning artwork and stay forever for the strong sense of culture and community.
