When entering a home designed by Rob Diaz, the incredible materials and timeless design are striking, all curated with health and wellness in mind. His focus on eco-friendly design ushers in exquisite textures and finishes, bringing a space to life that is classic yet modern, elegant yet playful—always spirited and uplifting.
Represented by Jen Winston, 4138 Fulton Avenue is Rob’s latest project in Sherman Oaks, and showcases his core design philosophy in a beautiful way. He aimed to design a home with both functionality and substance in mind, while incorporating European and Californian design influences. And he did just that.
In all projects, Rob is inspired by a classic yet contemporary aesthetic that will stand the test of time. When designing spaces, he is constantly looking to challenge himself and think beyond the typical to find innovative design solutions. For the Fulton project, he incorporated clean lines with natural textures to complement the home’s modern charm. From the rock exterior to the smooth and fluted clay walls, vintage sinks, new concrete colored sinks, classic lighting, and luxurious materials, the design evokes an understated elegance that will last for generations to come.
With the goal to create a healthy, non-toxic home, every material has been thoughtfully sourced, all LEED-certified products with zero toxins. Throughout the home, non-toxic and refined plaster is used, done by Clayworks UK and Clayworks USA. Rob applied fluted Demi rustic clay on the dining room wall and inside the main bedroom, adding depth and texture that expertly contrasts the adjoining smooth walls and ceilings.
The vision for the exterior was to integrate a serene garden area between the two A-frames and make the home open to the outside. This unique layout allowed him to separate the main bedroom suite from the other two bedrooms in the home, creating an interesting floor plan that adds privacy to the main suite—a spa-like retreat of its own.
The exterior landscape was made from 100% natural materials: cobblestones were used for the walkways, filletti for the driveway and pathway borders, Chalford large field tile was used around the pool, and ruff cut for pool coping. The walls around the home were made of smooth plaster and the gates were custom-made from old pine to purposely fuse time and balance together. Beautiful natural marble and jade fountains add a serene ambiance. The gravel driveway seems to transport you somewhere outside the city. Four massive trees were brought onsite, including two incredible, large Manzanilla olive trees. It’s an outdoor paradise—scenic and functional.
Inside and outside, this home is a place to lounge, entertain, and savor the surrounding beauty.
