Our picks of places to go and things to do to make the most of your month in and around Pasadena.
ROCK OUT HERE – The Cure, Pixies and Deftones are coming to Pasadena’s Brookside Golf Course (near the Rose Bowl) this month for The Daydream Festival. In addition to that stellar headlining trio, The Cure has hand-selected some of their favorite artists to join the one-day festival’s lineup on August 31—including Welsh alt-rock band The Joy Formidable and singer-songwriter Emma Ruth Rundle.
KICK BACK WITH A FLICK HERE – An open-air movie is a must-do in the summertime, so be sure to mark Saturday, August 10 in your calendar for the Rose Bowl Movie Night. The jumbotron will be playing football drama Remember the Titans. Doors open at 6:30pm and the movie starts at 8pm, tickets are priced at $10 for youths and $20 for adults.
REVEL IN RARE FRUIT HERE – This year’s Festival of Fruit at the Huntington Library is a three-day celebration of all things fruit. Hosted by The California Rare Fruit Growers (CFRG) Friday, August 16 through Sunday, August 18, this event will center on fruit-growing talks, workshops, Huntington garden tours, fruit and plant vendor booths, tastings, and more. Listen in on expert-led chats about loquats, growing blueberries in SoCal and how to attract native bees to your garden, among many others.
TRY ALL THE TRUCKS HERE – It’s not too late to get your food truck fix! The Rose Bowl’s Final Fridays Food Truck Festival will host its last session on Friday, August 30 from 4pm-8pm. Stop by this free event to scope out the food truck offerings and play some outdoor games.
DO JAZZ HANDS HERE – When the weather is nice and the sun sets late, few things are better than a relaxed outdoor jazz concert. Catch performances at the Playhouse District Summer Jazz Concert Series, which takes place every Sunday evening this month in the public courtyard between Vroman’s Bookstore and the Laemmle Playhouse 7 from 5-7pm. Music ranges from smooth jazz to folksy blues.
GET LOCAL TRENDS HERE – In-the-know trendsetters and crafts-lovers will be making time for Jackalope Summer Nights, a free shopping event at the Central Park in Old Pasadena that spotlights more than 200 makers and designers of local goods. Running from 5pm-10pm August 2 and 3, this event brings together original fashion, jewelry, pottery, paper goods, home decor, art and even a beer garden and roaming musicians (so indie).
