Palm Springs and the surrounding area is home to some of Southern California’s most incredible hikes and stunning lookout points. With the spring season upon us, here are some of The Agency’s favorite trails from La Quinta to Joshua Tree.
SOUTH LYKKEN TRAIL – If views are what you’re after, this moderately strenuous, dog-friendly hike, accessible off South Palm Canyon Drive about 1 1/2 miles south of Highway 111, has you covered. The 3.5-mile round trip hike begins at an elevation of 560’ and gradually gains to 900’, revealing sweeping views of Palm Springs, Mt. San Jacinto and the Coachella Valley when you reach the top. Start your hike early to avoid the heat—and keep your eyes peeled for Bighorn sheep and wildflowers along the way!
INDIAN CANYONS & TAHQUITZ CANYON – As the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Indian Canyons are considered especially sacred—and ancient rock art, house pits, dams, reservoirs trails and food preparation areas can still be found in the canyons today. One of the most popular trails in the area is Tahquitz Canyon, a challenging 1.8-mile trek past native plants and wildlife that leads to a spectacular, 60-foot waterfall.
BEAR CREEK TRAILHEAD – On a clear day, this popular trail in La Quinta rewards well-heeled hikers with panoramic views in every direction, stretching to the Salton Sea and most of the Coachella Valley. As you begin your ascent, the hustle of the valley makes way for a gorgeous landscape of local hills and rock formations—and the higher you go, the better the view. If you make it to the four-mile mark, you’ll be greeted by a massive oasis at the end of the canyon—perfect for enjoying a picnic lunch before making your way back down to reality.
COVE TO LAKE TRAILHEAD – This 6.6-mile back trail is considered one of the best at La Quinta Cove. Described as more of a walk than a hike—perfect for those looking to spend a little time outdoors without exerting too much energy—the trail runs along The Quarry golf course before leading through Morrow Trail and ending at Lake Cahuilla, the perfect place for a picnic or well-deserved nap.
JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK – Two distinct desert ecosystems converge in Joshua Tree National Park—the Mojave and the Colorado—resulting in one of the world’s most stunning natural landscapes. An easy day trip from Palm Springs, the park’s many hiking trails weave through massive boulders and mythical Joshua Trees, with plenty of options for newbies and advanced hikers alike. Popular beginner’s hikes include Hidden Valley and Barker Dam Loop, while those interested in more of a challenge would be wise to checkout Lost Horse Mine, a 6.7-mile trek past breathtaking desert panoramas to an old mine dating back to the California Gold Rush.
