The mountain destination of Park City is a hiking mecca with more than 330 trails and 17 peaks located within Park City Mountain Resort alone. Beyond the mountain resort are endless trail systems worthy of exploring (no mountain pass required). With the spring season upon us, here are some of The Agency’s favorite local hiking trails for everyone from the novice to the advanced hiker.
HISTORIC RAIL TRAIL – A designated National Recreation Trail and one of the state’s most unique parks, the 26-mile corridor begins near Park City at 6,900’. The trail offers a rich cultural history, following the Union Pacific abandoned railroad tracks that date back to 1880. Closest to town is the paved portion of the trail, which extends for approximately three miles and is popular among walkers, runners and bikers. The Rail Trail then stretches through wetland meadows in Silver Creek Canyon, heads to the towns nearby and follows the Weber River to the Echo Reservoir. The dog-friendly trail offers fantastic views of canyons, farmlands, rock formations and local wildlife, such as bald eagles, herons, moose, marmots and beavers.
FLYING DOG – A favorite among the locals is this 6.4-mile stretch of Flying Dog trail, which rises 1,027’ and is accessed from the Glenwild Loop. Both a biking and hiking trail, the trail climbs 16 exposed switchbacks, then winds down through aspens and pines. Moose and other wildlife have been spotted near the pond at mile 4.1. The section from Glenwild Loop is family friendly and dogs are permitted on leash. Since the trail is popular among mountain bikers, it’s advised to leave the headphones at home and keep an ear and eye out for bikers.
ROUND VALLEY – A popular destination for fat tire biking and cross country skiing in the winter, by spring/summer Round Valley is one of the most popular (and populated) trails for hiking and biking. It lies just northeast of Old Town and encompasses nearly 700 acres of preserved open space covered in wildflowers. The area offers more than 30 miles of trails fit for all skill levels. Around the 6,500’ mark is the best spot for early spring hiking and trail running.
MILLENIUM TRAIL – All levels and ages will enjoy a run, walk or bike on this easily accessible and dog-friendly paved trail, which stretches a mile in length. It’s the perfect route to catch a glimpse of one of Park City’s most iconic and recognizable landmarks—the “White Barn” at the McPolin Farm. The farm was purchased by the Citizens of Park City in 1990 and extensively refurbished, welcoming visitors and residents who frequent the Millenium Trail.
PC HILL – The perfect out and back hike, totaling 2.6 miles, will soon be lined with wildflowers and captures views of all of Park City and the surrounding mountains. “The local’s hiking hill” is a moderate hike, climbing 475 feet in elevation with fantastic views waiting at the top. Its short distance and panoramic vistas make it the perfect short hike with kids and/or dogs, but there’s no shade on the way so be sure to bring along water and hats on sunny days.
