The dazzling LED video art installation that welcomes residents and guests to Metropolis has won international distinction for its innovation and creativity. “Convergence” spans 100 feet wide and 20 feet tall at the porte-cochere entrance of Tower I and provides an ever-evolving exploration of L.A.’s diversity, creativity, culture and community. Commissioned by Greenland USA, “Convergence” is a collaborative piece by local artists Refik Anadol and Susan Narduli and conceived to express and respond to the spirit of the city in a seamless fusion of digital content, public space and urban life.
“Metropolis is a reflection of the new Downtown Los Angeles community and a gateway to the district,” said Anadol. “Similarly, we’ve built ‘Convergence’ on this theme of Los Angeles’ past, present and future, tapping into its history as the cradle of digital art and pushing its boundaries.”
“Convergence” combines real-time demographic, astronomical, oceanographic, tectonic and climate-based data streams, as well as social media posts, traffic and news feeds to present a continually changing cinematic narrative of Los Angeles. The display involved many disciplines, including structural, electrical, architectural and artistic. It was brought to life by a collaboration between the artists and the Metropolis design and construction teams at Gensler, Webcor and Greenland USA. According to StandardVision, which was involved in the design and construction of the sign, “Convergence” is the world’s first architectural media installation utilizing a 380-Volt DC power system.
The installation won a Digital Signage Expo 2018 APEX Award in the Event Venues & Hospitality category, one of nine categories from a field of 116 entrants from 10 countries.
