Four Interior Design Trends To Warm Up Your Home This Winter

by | Dec 15, 2016

With the holidays around the corner, you’re probably wondering how to make your home more festive and stylish, so here’s a look at some white-hot winter trends you’ll want to cozy up to this season and beyond.

All White

While all-white rooms have become increasingly popular this year, they’re even more beautiful when inspired by a winter wonderland. Thanks to busy schedules and omnipresent technology, a growing desire for greater peace, tranquility, and spirituality (particularly during the holiday season) is a driver for all-white spaces and color schemes. So if you’re looking for a way to unplug from a stressful day of holiday shopping, an all-white interior is just the way to do it—and the way to do this color palette right is to layer it with other pale neutrals to keep the design from becoming too stark or antiseptic. Wood and metal finishes warm up a white interior well, and lots of textured fabrics add visual interest.

Faux Fur

One interior trend fueling the rise of fabulous fabrics is the “glamily room,” a riff on a great-looking space that comfortably accommodates the entire family. And with faux fur accents, you really can have it all with cozy opulence that is totally livable. Fur is great for adding texture to any room, but particularly one that is clean and minimal. Try adding a touchable throw blanket, comforter, or rug to elevate a simple space, and don’t forget the “touch test” when selecting fabric. The longer the length of the pile, the more luxurious it will feel, just like these must-have faux fur accents by Donna Salyers.

Velvet

In case you haven’t noticed it in every shop window and holiday catalogue, velvet might very well be the fabric of the season, so why not give it a place in your home? Sumptuous and soft to the touch, velvet makes a room look both luxurious and inviting at the same time. Though we love the drama of a velvet sofa or loveseat, you don’t have to go all out to enjoy this fabulous fabric. Amp up your interior with an accent chair or a couple pillows, or, better yet, try using this winter fabric in bright spring or summer hues for a fun pop of color. Look to Schumacher for some of the best velvet textiles around.

Glitter & Gold

A touch of glittery metallic adds glamour to any space by reflecting light around a room. Best of all, the rules for decorating with metals have drastically changed. Blending metallic finishes is no longer taboo, so mix and match to your heart’s content, but remember some basic rules. It’s best to mix warm tones (gold, brass, copper) with cool ones (chrome, silver, nickel), otherwise the design can become a little overwhelming. Metals pair well—and pare down—with natural fibers, neutral colors, and faux fur. Remember to not just mix metals, but finishes too. Combining polished metals with hammered, brushed, or matte metallics helps achieve balance and harmony within a space.
