Following a three-year renovation, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art reopened as the largest contemporary art museum in America, with thousands of newly acquired works filling triple the original gallery space. To engage visitors on a whole new level, SFMOMA teamed up with Apple and Detour to develop digital tours offering diverse experiences, from philosophical and emotional, to hilarious and strange.
More than 200 patrons donated 3,000 museum-quality works from their private collections, including works by Pablo Picasso, Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, Diane Arbus and Robert Rauschenberg. Among others, billionaire financier Charles R. Schwab donated around 27 works from his own collection, including pieces by Francis Bacon and Jackson Pollock. Co-founders of Gap Clothing, Doris and the late Donald Fisher, contributed 260 postwar and contemporary works ranging from US artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, German post-war greats such as Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter, and British sculptors Tony Cragg and Barbara Hepworth.
Designed by Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta, the new SFMOMA integrates a 10-story 170,000-square-foot expansion with Mario Bottega’s original building. The space displays a total collection of more than 33,000 works of architecture and design, media arts (which includes games and performances), painting, photography and sculpture.
To help you navigate these works, Apple, Detour, and SFMOMA reimagined the audio tour experience with an innovative app that offers you a choice of colorful commentary from podcasters, comedians, sportscasters, artists and more. In one tour, Martin Starr and Kumail Nanjiani of HBO’s Silicon Valley debate whether Duchamp’s urinal is a stunning masterpiece—or merely junk. In another tour, French high-wire walker Philippe Petit muses on whether paintings can really be transcendent. Simply select a tour from the app, press play and slip your phone into your pocket or bag.
