L.A.’s sister city, Mexico City, gifted a beautiful set of bronze wings designed by Jorge Marin to the city, and was formally accepted by Mayor Eric Garcetti and City Hall on Thursday, April 7. The gorgeous sculpture made its way to us after originally being offered to L.A. during a trade mission to Mexico two years earlier.
The artwork, titled “Alas de la Ciudad”, which translated in English means “Wings of the City”, is a beautiful present that symbolizes the strong friendship the two cities have had with each other for decades. It’s an open message that represents a bond without borders and restriction between Mexico City and Los Angeles, and the influence Mexican heritage and culture has played in southern California.
L.A.’s Cultural Affairs Department plans on hanging the wings in the Civic Center area of the city. They hang in midair, just above the shoulders, so passerby’s will have the perfect opportunity for a fun photo-op.
