With the parade of stunning gowns at the Academy Awards behind us, sights are now set on the annual Met Gala in New York City. Synonymous with Vogue’s Anna Wintour, the event is preceded by months of painstaking preparation as the worlds of haute couture fashion and art collide. Filmmaker, Andrew Bolton, chronicles the preparation of the art exhibition and the gala that it inspired in his behind-the-scenes documentary, “The First Monday in May.”
Set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 13, viewers will see what it took to produce the 2015 exhibit, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” which highlighted China’s influence in fashion at the Metropolitan Musuem of Art’s Costume Institute. One of the most buzzed about exhibitions ever, the collection was one of the top five most-visited exhibitions of all time.
Described by André Leon Talley, American Editor-at-Large for Vogue, as “the Superbowl of social fashion events,” the trailer of the documentary offers an exciting glimpse into the strategic and inspired psyches of both Wintour and Head Curator, Andrew Bolton.
For 2016, Bolton confirmed the theme: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” as the exhibition that will provide the inspiration for the 2016 Met Ball taking place on Monday, May 2. Hosting the event are cochairs Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive, Taylor Swift and Anna Wintour. Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada will serve as honorary chairs, and the gala and accompanying exhibition will be sponsored by Apple.
