The year 2016 will welcome the culmination of these impressive structures that push the architectural envelope. From unconventional building materials and methods to arresting creativity, below are five buildings to be appreciated in the year to come.
1.World Trade Center Transportation Hub (New York)
The roughly 800,000-square-foot winged structure (pictured above), was designed to evoke a bird taking flight and will ultimately house 11 subway lines, rivaling Grand Central Terminal in scale. The hub will open incrementally in the first half of 2016 and will contain some 400,000 square feet of retail space.
2. National Museum of African American History and Culture (Washington, D.C.)
This new edition to the Smithsonian Institution will open this fall on the National Mall, just steps from the Washington Monument. Four firms collaborated to design this 420,000-square-foot institution that will house artifacts related to African American history and culture.
3. Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (Berkeley, California)
Owned by the University of California and set to debut this month, this 83,000-square-foot space will reunite the Berkeley Art Museum and the Pacific Film Archive under the same gleaming stainless-steel roof. At a cost of $112 million, the inaugural exhibition will feature “Architecture of Life” wherein more than 250 artworks spanning the past 2,000 years will be on display.
4. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, California)
Scheduled to open in May 2016, the $305 million expansion to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a striking compliment to the institution’s existing structure. At 235,000 square feet, the expansion will triple the museum’s gallery space and include the new Pritzker Center for Photography, as well as showcase some 600 artworks.
5. Faena Forum (Miami Beach, Florida)
This high-profile 43,000-square-foot cultural center is being erected in South Florida’s Faena District, a massive full-service enclave developed by Argentine entrepreneur Alan Faena. Building completion is set for April 2016 and will feature two connected volumes (a cube and a cylinder) wrapped in a structural facade of crisscrossing arches and catenary terms. The form will feature artistic collaborations and will showcase artwork and performance pieces.
