Toast The Derby With These Cocktails

by | May 1, 2015

The 141st running of the Kentucky Derby takes over Churchill Downs this Saturday, May 2. The two day celebration is as much about the hats, dresses, and more than 120,000 mint juleps consumed as it is the horses. What better way to celebrate than with these Derby themed cocktails?

All the King’s Horses

1 1/2 ounces Grey Goose Le Melon

1 ounce fresh grapefruit juice

1 ounce fresh lemon juice

1 ounce St. Germain

1 jalapeno

Muddle one slice of jalapeno in a shaker. Add remaining ingredients and shake vigorously. Strain into a Collins glass filled with fresh ice and top with soda and jalapeno garnish.

Horse’s Neck

1 lemon peel spiral

2 ounces Copper & Kings brandy

1 ginger beer

A couple dashes of aromatic bitters

Build in a tall glass, starting with the lemon spiral. Add ice and brandy. Fill to top with ginger beer and stir. Top with bitters.

Oaks Lily

The Grey Goose Oaks Lily is the official drink of the Kentucky Oaks.

2 ounces vodka

2 ounces sweet and sour mix

6 ounces cranberry juice

triple sec

blackberries

Combine all ingredients in a shaker along with ice. Shake, strain and add more ice, plus the blackberries as garnish, and you’re good to go.

Classic Mint Julep

3 fresh mint leaves

1 tablespoon Mint Simple Syrup

Crushed ice

1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) bourbon

1 (4-inch) cocktail straw or coffee stirrer

1 fresh mint sprig

Powdered sugar (optional)

Place mint leaves and Mint Simple Syrup in a chilled julep cup. Gently press leaves against cup with back of spoon to release flavors. Pack cup tightly with crushed ice; pour bourbon over ice. Insert straw, place mint sprig directly next to straw, and serve immediately. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired.
