Legendary Hollywood entertainer Bob Hope amassed an impressive portfolio of homes over his lifetime, with the most iconic being The Hope Residence in Palm Springs, designed by acclaimed Modernist architect John Lautner. The largest private residence ever designed by Lautner, the 23,366-square foot home was built to resemble a volcano, with sleek, sweeping concrete, steel and glass walls, and an undulating copper roof meant to complement the contours of the surrounding mountains.
An oculus at the roof’s center opens like the cone of a volcano onto the desert sky. Situated at the top of the gated community of Southridge, the Hope home overlooks the entire Coachella Valley, with views of Banning Pass to the north and Mount San Jacinto to the west. “The whole desert was at your feet,” Hope’s daughter, Linda Hope, told the New York Times.
Earlier this year – nearly a decade after Bob Hope’s passing at the age of 100 – the home was quietly marketed by Ann Eysenring, now of The Agency, Patrick Jordan and Stewart Smith.
