The following interview with Jennifer Polachek was first published in The Agency Report – Second Quarter 2013. Polachek is the Associate Publisher of Angeleno Magazine, and Publisher of Brides California and Interiors California.
Q: Here in LA, what trends are you seeing right now in terms of interior design? What colors are hot? What materials? Do you have any favorites?
A: Pantone just announced the new spring color – Dazzling Blue. I expect to see a lot of it in the coming months, and I am not complaining!

The Angeleno Residence designed by Oliver M. Furth, fully outfitted with the most unique high-end fittings and finishes. Available turn-key for $3,600,000.
Materials wise, lucite, lucite, lucite! Bar carts, tables, chairs, you name it. In terms of trends, the 70s and 80s are back, so we’re seeing tons of plants everywhere, tie dyed/shibori textiles, textural plant and wall hangings. as always, vintage elements mixed with new items. Geometric forms, facets, painted metal, lacquered furniture and walls. Also, local is a trend: “Made in the USA” and especially “Made in LA” items.
Q: What exotic or imported materials have you been seeing a lot of lately?
A: We’ve been seeing a lot of petrified wood, shagreen, and leather in unexpected places (floor tiles, walls).
Q: How are you seeing technology affect or change interior design?
A: I see it affecting everything from homeowners being able to follow designers on social media to the full design process being technology-driven. Everyone is hooked to their mobile devices, and designing a home is all about allowing that homeowner to feel comfort and accessibility in their space. It reminds me of when people first started wiring homes “for sound.” Now the conversations are about being able to control your home from outside of your home, and having the flexibility to watch television, play music, or hook your device into other home appliances. it’s all about how technology can improve your in-home experience.
Q: What do you think is the best museum (or gallery) for interior design inspiration in LA?
A: This is a tough one because there are so many great museums and galleries in the city. I would have to say LACMA, as it was the first museum I went to in Los Angeles, so it will always feel special to me. The grounds are immaculate, and being from a colder climate (Chicago), the outdoor space transitioning into indoor space will never get old to me. You can spend hours getting lost on the campus, and inspiration is everywhere. I have to also mention the Pacific Design Center. It’s truly inspiring to be surrounded by some of the best furniture showrooms in the country, all under one roof.
