In what Los Angeles Magazine is calling a “Hendrix-at-Woodstock moment for culinary groupies” comes a collaboration between chef and artist with a unique twist. For two weeks starting today, October 16th, pop-up chef Craig Thornton of the acclaimed Wolvesmouth and artist Matthew Bone will take over a portion of the Santa Monica Museum of Art for “Cut Your Teeth”, a two-week residency offering a bold and unexpected awakening of the senses.

To create a world where food and art collide, the two men have transformed the Museum’s Main Gallery into an “overgrown installation of organic, vegetal, and skeletal forms inspired by the relationship between predator and prey” and will serve special dinners on Oct. 16-19 and Oct. 22-25 (with two seatings each night) in a darkly wooden den. Bone’s bold installations, combined with Thornton’s “mythological culinary skills”, will emphasize nature’s capacity to “evoke the sublime, to give life and also take it away,” states the SMMoA.
When it comes to the events boldness, Thornton has no reservations, telling the Los Angeles Times that, “I’m putting everything on the line, but that’s the only way to do it. Otherwise, what’s the point? Rather than being comfortable, wondering whether people enjoyed what we do and can we just ride it out, I want to say OK now we’re shifting into fourth gear.” Unfortunately, reserving a dinner plate is nearly impossible at this point, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the experience. Anyone is encouraged to explore the exhibit and watch Wolvesmouth prepare during the museum’s normal hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm.
