3 New Cookbooks From Los Angeles Based Chefs

by | Oct 1, 2013

We’ve practically mailed out our dinner party invites and pre-set our ovens in preparation for this Fall’s impressive roundup of foodie book offerings. Why, just shy of a baker’s dozen of titles are being released on the same day, representing restaurants from across the country, like Gramercy Tavern in NYC and Pok Pok in Portland.

You can view all the season’s covers and descriptions on EaterLA’s Fall 2013 Cookbook & Food Book Preview, yet what we find most inspiring is being able to recreate our favorite dishes from the most talked about restaurants right here in Los Angeles, and from the looks of it, our city’s chefs and bakers have a lot to say this month.

Make room in your kitchen for the following three October book releases:

The A.O.C. Cookbook by Suzanne Goin, release date October 29. Based upon the receival of her first cookbook title, the James Beard Award-winning Sunday Suppers at Lucques, we’ve got high expectations for the follow-up of her sophomore restaurant, A.O.C. Wine and cheese lovers rejoice, for specific wine pairings are offered alongside dishes and a glossary of cheeses and her personal notes are featured at the back of the book.

On the menu: Lamb Meatballs with Spiced Tomato Sauce, Mint, and Feta; Bacon-Wrapped Dates with Parmesan; Duck Sausage with Candied Kumquats; S’Mores with Caramel Popcorn and Chocolate Sorbet.

The Lemonade Cookbook: Southern California Comfort Food from L.A.’s Favorite Modern Cafeteria by Alan Jackson with JoAnn Cianciulli, release date October 29. Ever since Lemonade first stepped on the scene, the culture of the “marketplace” has never been the same. Sophisticated, urban foodies who are (most likely) on the run appreciate the simple yet bold flavors that Jackson fuses into each of his “take and go” dishes.

On the menu: Skirt Steak with Grilled Piquillo Peppers, Chinese Long Beans, Plums, and Scallion Vinaigrette; Banana Mascarpone Layer Cake; Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Cookies.

Sweet by Valerie Gordon, release date October 8. Sugar-crazed Angelenos will love the cookbook debut of one of the city’s golden pastry chefs, Valerie Gordon, owner of Valerie Confections’ Bakery and Cafe. Her comforting tone eases you from basic cakes and pies to more inventive recipes so that the next time you’re thinking of bringing a box of confections—toffees, truffles, caramels, marshmallows?—to a friend, you’ll be ready to make them at home yourself.

On the menu: The Brown Derby Grapefruit Cake; Plum and Marzipan Crumble Pie; Salted Peanut Blondies; Black Mission Fig, Pear, and Port Jam; Matcha White Chocolate Macadamia Cookies.
