Twelve years after the attacks of September 11, One World Trade Center, the centerpiece of the new World Trade Center complex, is finally nearing completion with a scheduled opening date in early 2014. Formerly known as the Freedom Tower, the building soars above the city at 1,776 feet, making it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
The 3-million-square-foot building was designed by David M. Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and will include office space, an observation deck, world-class restaurants, and broadcast and antennae facilities.
Today, New York is marking the 12th anniversary of the attacks on the Twin Towers by lighting up the city’s skies at sunset with two sky-piercing columns of light, referred to as the Tribute in Light.
Along with the rest of the nation, and people all across the world, we honor and remember those who lost their lives on September 11 and the brave heroes on that day who still inspire us today.
