Every year, the editors of Dwell magazine curate Dwell on Design, an annual modern design event that brings together the best products, ideas, and individuals in the industry. This year, the event will take place June 21-23, 2013 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
One of the event’s most intriguing elements will be the East Side & Downtown Home Tour. More of a self-guided excursion, the tour is on June 22 from 10am – 4pm. Take as much or little time as you please walking through and admiring each home.
This year’s East Side & Downtown Home Tour will feature five architecturally diverse residences, each with their own compelling elements. Read on to find out more about each property and be sure to read our Guide to Downtown LA.

Kim Residence
La Canada Flintridge
This three-bedroom ranch-style home, built in the 1950s, went through a major renovation in 2012 (built by Form Environment Research Studio), which included a 900-square-foot addition. The residence features large windows, a kitchen with all appliances hidden within the walnut veneer cabinetry, and a spacious living area built from marble, wood, and steel. Because the home sits on a slope, it blends in well with surrounding nature and is hard to spot from the street above.
Tattuplex
Silverlake
Designed for a Zen Buddhist Monk who is also a male nurse, this all-steel duplex, located on a hill in east Silver Lake, is the epitome of a customized living space. Architectural features include overlapping decks, made of Ecosteel, that jut out to create a beautiful play on space The upper unit living room is encased by a balcony that overlooks the lake.
H House
Glendale
Though architecturally designed by Richard Banta, Brett Nichols purchased this Glendale property in 2011 and gave it a cosmetic revamp. Renovations included sprucing up the 1980’s style bathrooms, repainting, and complimenting the structure with classic, contemporary furniture. Areas such as the classic balcony overlooking the Glendale hills have a 1960’s, ultramodern feel.
Atwater Crossing Residence
Atwater Village
This contemporary living space is part of Charles Kluger’s 28-series project that won the AIA 2011 Design award. The project as a whole has defined the neighborhood’s innovative look because of the concrete, steel, and glass “Curtain Wall” style construction. This particular home includes a stunning glasshouse front made up of over 45 square and rectangle windows.
Patterson Residence & Colorola Studies
Downtown LA
Located in the historically significant Beaux Arts–style Los Angeles Board of Trade Building, which was built in 1929 and the first to have automated elevators on the west coast, this space’s beauty is a result of its minimalistic style. Stuart Patterson, a graphic designer, took three floors of the building for his own, transforming the bottom into his living space, and the two above floors into his agency’s studio. Perhaps most notable is the use of the structures’ original materials in contrast with bright furniture and beautiful graphic design elements.
