Tribeca Film Festival Opens in New York

by | Apr 17, 2013

The worlds of art, film, and music are once again converging on the city of New York as an estimated 3 million people are expected to attend the 12th Annual Tribeca Film Festival in theaters across Lower Manhattan.

Opening the festival tonight will be the music documentary “Mistaken for Strangers,” a tale about the indie rock group The National that was shot by the lead singer’s metalhead brother. Through April 28, few seats will be left unattended as moviegoers flock to nearly 90 movies from 30 countries, along with panel discussions, concerts, and celebrity-studded parties. Closing out the festival will be a digitally restored version of Martin Scorsese’s “The King of Comedy,” starring Robert Deniro, one of the festival’s founders.

We can expect a full line-up among the seven competitive categories including best new documentary filmmaker, best narrative feature, and best narrative short, as well as the always exciting Spotlight (narratives and documentaries that blur the lines of independent and mainstream filmmaking) and Midnight (formerly known as Cinemania, these titles demand horror) selections.

And joining the Tribeca Film Festival for the very first time is the entirely new Storyscapes, a category created to showcase the artists who approach film from a web-based or cross-media perspective. Among the five innovative projects generating buzz is “Star Wars Uncut,” developer Casey Pugh’s mashup of fan-created remakes of the George Lucas science-fiction epic, presented in fifteen second increments.

Tickets will be on sale at all festival venue box offices based on screening or event availability. For a full look at what they are offering and details on online ticketing, head to their site.
