10 Best Wine Travel Destinations For 2013

by | Jan 22, 2013

New York-based Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s top 10 best wine destinations for 2013 have us all pining for pinot.
Ranging from rolling countryside allure in Willamette Valley, Oregon, to a backdrop of majestic mountains in Stellenbosch, South Africa, the regions are as adventurous as the wine itself. Whether by car, train, boat, bicycle, foot or even by hot-air-balloon, as is the case in the vineyards in and around Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Australia, the possibilities of exploring are endless. And since our idea of wine-tasting extends far beyond the tasting room, we’re pleased to see luxurious spas, art galleries, moonlight hikes, and recommendations for experiencing authentic cuisine among the activities offered on this year’s list.

Featuring the “granddaddy of them all,” in terms of Spanish wine regions, is the town of Rioja, located in the Northeast corner along the Ebro River. Here, visitors can stay in Frank Gehry-designed Hotel Marques de Riscal in between sips. Perhaps one of the most breathtaking spots is Puglia, Italy, where crystal-blue water hugs a thin peninsula dotted with weathered stone homes, restaurants, and a 13th century Castle del Monte. Editors of the magazine have included where to dine, where to stay, and where to taste in each destination along with the most prominent wines, how to plan on a budget, and local offerings to satisfy your upcoming itinerary.
Other picks include North & South Forks of Long Island, New York; Monterey County, California; Danube, Austria; Vale dos Vinhedos, Brazil; Douro Valley, Portugal. View the full list here.
