After Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the NYC area, many there wondered what to do with all the debris left in its wake. For Jennifer Gorsche, a NYC design writer, she saw an opportunity for the city’s inventive design community to come together to help those who have suffered devastating losses during the storm.
Gorsche, along with Jean Lin (of the Designer Pages 3rings and Otto blogs) and designer Brad Ascalon, reached out to their network of furniture designers and artists and encouraged them to use reclaimed materials from Hurricane Sandy to create new work to be auctioned to benefit the storm’s victims.
This Wednesday, December 19, the work of more than 20 “Reclaim NYC” designers will be showcased and auctioned at Ligne Roset (155 Wooster Street, 7-9pm), the proceeds of which will go to the American Red Cross in Greater New York. The pieces (see examples in gallery below) range from tables and chairs to lighting fixtures and art objects, all salvaged from the storm and inspired by the flooding.
