This November 18, AIA | Los Angeles‘ Modernist/Contemporary Tour will put the spotlight on Rudolph Schindler’s Bubeshko Apartments, one of the architect’s best-known multi-family designs. Architecture and design enthusiasts will be treated to a guided tour by Eric Haas, AIA, and Chava Danielson, AIA, of DSH Architects, the firm responsible for renovating the two apartment buildings designed by Schindler between 1938 and 1941.

Schindler’s concept for the project was to create a “Greek hillside” of five units, each unique in size, configuration, orientation and finish. His clients were a mother-and-daughter who had a vision of a Silver Lake salon for artists, architects and musicians.
“As he did in his Kings Road house and in his El Pueblo Ribera Court in La Jolla, Schindler, with his Bubeshko Apartments, masterfully maintains the privacy of, while creating a community for, the residents who live within,” notes The Agency’s Billy Rose. “In this regard, Schindler was decades ahead of today’s developers who endeavor to adeptly achieve those goals.”
After suffering years of neglect, the buildings were rehabilitated under the architectural guidance of DSH beginning in 2006. Their approach to the restoration project involved studying the building’s history and Schindler’s formative theories and intentions. “We focused on the project’s DNA: its generative ideas, theories of spatial configuration, and employment of color and material to achieve those ends,” commented DSH.
As AIA | Los Angeles points out, the restoration of these buildings is a model for future work: careful study, open to revision, undertaken with economy, environmental sensitivity and integrity. The project has received numerous awards including those from the AIA/LA, AIA/CC, the Los Angeles Conservancy, the California Preservation Foundation, and the State of California. The building was also featured in the MOCA Schindler Retrospective.
