Basking in its modern-day revival, the Brentwood Country Mart continues to serve the community in every charming capacity at the corner of San Vincente and 26th Street.
Appealing to families, fashionistas, foodies and the famous, the marketplace has remained the “one stop shopping” destination for nearly seven decades. Whether picking up an invitation at the paperie, grabbing a seasonal bouquet at the florist, or satisfying a sweet tooth at the hands of the chocolatier, local “Brentwoodiens” have watched the storefronts change hands over the years yet never lose its ‘mom and pop’ appeal.
Indie boutiques and on-trend eateries share space under the long red barn with the original post office, shoe repair shop, and barbershop where Ronald Reagan would frequent for a haircut. Twenty-seven shops and stalls encircle cobblestone courtyards with plenty of picnic tables making the Country Mart the complete shopping experience. And one more thing: the parking is free.
Tell everyone to meet at the central fire pit for lunch and make your way through these must-stops in the marketplace:
To Shop:
James Perse – Famous for its lightweight jersey t-shirt staple, James Perse takes its California brand to the activewear world with a more adventurous line: James Perse Yosemite. You’ll be prepared for the elements and still look sharp whether you camp, run, hike, surf, or downward dog.
Toy Crazy – This is the perfect stop for the kid in your life or the kid at heart. From books to crafts to science and building kits, the items in this toy shop are selected to not only be fun but educational.
Calypso St. Barth – For high-end fashion with international flair, be sure to visit this boutique, which mixes its own line of clothing and sensual fragrance collection with accessories from around the globe.
To Eat:
Reddie Chick – This classic Country Mart eatery serves up succulent rotisserie chicken and the “best french fries in LA” as one of the original stores in the mart.
Farmshop – This is as casual as world-renown cuisine gets. Chef-owner Jeff Cerciello (Culinary Director for widely-popular Bouchon Bakery and French Laundry, among others) uses fresh, artisanal ingredients in every dish from roasted pumpkin hummus to crispy pork belly.
Barney’s – For our less carnivorous friends, be sure to grab a meatless burger at Barney’s. They offer over twenty vegetarian options including Portobello, Garden and Wildwood Organic Tofu.
Sweet Rose Creamery – Turn the clock back and indulge in an old-fashioned float or malt shake at Sweet Rose Creamery where everything form the waffle cones to the marshmallows are made from scratch.
