Los Angeles’ Silver Lake Tops Forbes Hippest Hipster Neighborhood List

by | Oct 1, 2012

Your Ray-Ban’s aren’t playing tricks on you: Los Angeles’ Silver Lake was voted the Hippest Hipster Neighborhood in America on Forbes’ inaugural list, beating out other hipster havens like San Francisco’s Mission District, Brooklyn’s Williamsburg and Chicago’s Wicker Park. According to Forbes, the ranking was based on the neighborhood’s “walkability;” number of neighborhood coffee shops; assortment of local food trucks; the number and frequency of farmers markets; the selection of locally owned bars and restaurants; and the percentage of residents who work in artistic occupations.

Nestled in between Echo Park and Los Feliz, Silver Lake topped the list thanks to its booming arts scene and dense population of artists, designers, and musicians-all traditionally “hipster” occupations.

Even the buildings exude an avant garde aesthetic a hipster could love: Silver Lake is home to some of the most celebrated modernist architecture in the country, including Richard Neutra’s VDL Research House and John Lautner’s Silvertop. – Forbes

Sunset Junction, referring to the junction of Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, is host to festive street fairs, and on any given night will be packed with the creative class fueling up on single-origin coffee at Intelligentsia or grabbing an organic bite at Cafe Stella. Be sure to cap off the evening at Pazzo Gelato, where chocolate and vanilla lovers switch teams after tasting the heavenly pistachio.

It’s no wonder that properties are being scooped up in Silver Lake and adjoining neighborhoods. Here are a few that have been recently taken off the market.
