Downtown Los Angeles Shines During Sportsageddon Sunday

by | May 25, 2012

Some referred to it as “Sportsageddon” while others called it “Playoff-Palooza”—either way, last weekend in Downtown Los Angeles marked an unprecedented amount of action for the entertainment powerhouse AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group), owner and developer of the Ritz Carlton Residences at LA LIVE. The Staples Center and LA LIVE! complex were host to tens of thousands of fans shuffling back and forth to watch their favorite athletes hit hockey pucks, three-point shots and the pavement.

When Staples Center General Manager Lee Zeidman received Sunday’s schedule, his response was, “you’ve got to be kidding.“ The arena had to seamlessly coordinate a Kings’ playoff game in the afternoon followed by a Clippers’ playoff battle that evening—not to mention the final leg of a professional cycling race, the Amgen Tour of California. And across the freeway at Chavez Ravine, the Dodgers were playing. Despite fears of traffic gridlock, city transportation officials reported no major problems as a result of Sunday’s sports pileup.

For the city’s sports and entertainment epicenter, this news bodes very well for future growth, and specifically, Philip Anschutz’s mission to bring an NFL franchise to the city. Major investors have already flocked to Downtown Los Angeles to open new restaurants and build new hotels, and as we reported previously, AEG anticipates a $5 billion impact as a result of its NFL stadium and convention center plans.
